The 2020 European Union Internet Referral Unit (EU IRU) Transparency Report is a comprehensive summary of the EU IRU’s main achievements in 2020. This is the fourth edition of the annual report and it provides a detailed account of the prevention activities and investigative support carried out by the unit.
The EU IRU was founded in 2015 in order to reduce the level and impact of online content promoting terrorism or violent extremism. The EU IRU is part of Europol’s European Counter Terrorism Centre and its mandate includes referring terrorist and violent extremist content to online service providers and providing support to Member States and third parties in the context of internet investigations.
The EU IRU also supports Europol’s European Migrant Smuggling Centre by flagging detected internet content used by traffickers to offer smuggling services to migrants and refugees.
