Workshop in Colombia on Europol Malware Analysis Solution

news

The Europol Malware Analysis Solution (EMAS) was promoted during a workshop organised at the Colombian Police headquarters on 24 - 25 February 2016. The main purpose of the workshop was to present this malware analysis solution to the 35 representatives from law enforcement, CERTs1 and private sector from Colombia and others countries of the AMERIPOL community.

The first day was an open session for all participants and included examples of malware intelligence analysis and the exchange of expertise between the different participants. The second day of the workshop, restricted to law enforcement only, included a hands-on malware forensics and analysis session.  This gave law enforcement representatives the opportunity to set up EMAS accounts, upload malware and receive the analysis results, while understanding the way the sandbox environment works and becoming more confident in using the tool.

This workshop has allowed Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre to gain an overview of how the National Police of Colombia, CERTs and private industry within Colombia as well as other countries of AMERIPOL handle malware. EMAS is currently being shared with the EU Members States, as well as law enforcement from non-EU countries with which Europol has signed an operational agreement, including Colombia. CERTs and private industry from Colombia, as well as from other AMERIPOL countries cannot access directly the EMAS, having to rely instead on the Colombian representative posted at the Joint Cybercrime Action Taskforce (J-CAT) hosted at Europol’s headquarters in The Hague.
