Italian Guardia di Finanza (GdF), supported by Direzione Centrale per I Servizi Antidroga and Europol, have seized over 10 tonnes of cannabis and arrested 10 Turkish crew members in a coordinated action in the Mediterranean Sea on June, 3. The cannabis was transported in a cargo ship, which was intercepted by Italian authorities between Sardinia and Sicily. In addition, a large quantity of electronic devices was seized, including computers, mobile phones and SIM cards.
This interception is the result of international law enforcement cooperation against drugs trafficking in The mediterranean Sea, led by Italy, France and Spain, together with other EU countries, Third States, CeCLAD –M and MAOC-N (*).
Europol provided on-the-spot support by deploying four experts to Palermo equipped with mobile offices and forensic equipment. This allowed for the extraction of data from the seized electronic devices and its subsequent cross-matching against Europol's databases.
