Europol signs cooperation agreement with Liechtenstein

news

To enhance international cooperation in the fight against organised crime, Europol signed a new cooperation agreement with the Principality of Liechtenstein on 7 June 2013.

Liechtenstein is a member of the European Economic Area and the Schengen Area, but not of the European Union. Europol currently works with many non-EU countries and international organisations on the basis of cooperation agreements to facilitate the exchange of intelligence. Two types of agreements determine the nature of cooperation. Strategic agreements make it possible for the two parties involved to exchange all information with the exception of personal data. Operational agreements also allow the exchange of personal data, which means data relating to an identified or identifiable natural person.

The agreement on operational and strategic cooperation was signed by Rob Wainwright, Director of Europol, and Dr. Thomas Zwiefelhofer, Liechtenstein’s Deputy Prime Minister of the Ministry for Home Affairs, Justice and Economic Affairs, and will enter into force once ratified by Liechtenstein’s Parliament. In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding on Confidentiality and Information Assurance was also signed.
