On 15 May, Mr. Martinu, Europol’s Deputy Director, participated in a conference on victim support organised jointly by Victim Support Europe (VSE) and the Polish Ministry of Justice. The conference that took place in Warsaw was attended by numerous NGOs, journalists, relevant governmental entities as well as the European Commission, the Greek Presidency - and the incoming Italian Presidency - of the Council of the EU, the Fundamental Rights Agency and the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU.
Mr. Martinu explained the role of Europol, underlining its activities against the criminal phenomena causing the most significant suffering to victims, such as trafficking in human beings (THB) or sexual exploitation. He gave concrete examples of operations supported by Europol to stop human traffickers and paedophiles active in cyberspace. He also explained Europol’s support role, underlining that it is primarily for national law enforcement agencies to ensure victims’ rights in criminal procedures.
Europol’s contribution was very well received; THB and cybercrime were noted as areas that may require more attention from NGOs and authorities providing support to victims.
