Europol hosts first EMPACT Crypto Currencies Workshop

news

On 27 and 28 February 2017, Europol organised the first EMPACT Workshop on Crypto Currencies at its headquarters in The Hague, aimed at tackling the main issues surrounding Bitcoin investigations.

The two-day operational and tactical workshop also focused on enabling investigators and analysts to improve their investigative skills when dealing with crimes such as ransomware or extortion notes, and improving the way in which Europol can support such investigations by national law enforcement authorities.

Fifty-six participants from all EU Member States and third parties attended the event. During the meeting, investigators and analysts put their technical skills to use and shared experiences relevant to crypto currencies.

Crypto currencies such as Bitcoin are decentralised monetary systems that are increasingly abused by criminals, hence the importance of EU law enforcement agencies incorporating strategic and technical developments into their work to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals.
