Rob Wainwright, the Director of Europol, met today in Bucharest with Mr Gabriel Oprea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs and the senior management of the Romanian Police and Romanian Border Police.
Romania’s important role in tackling serious and organised crime, such as drug trafficking, cybercrime or trafficking in human beings and the strong cooperation between Europol and Romanian law enforcement authorities, were among the topics discussed during the visit.
Furthermore, practical steps were discussed for further enhancing cooperation with Europol to investigate the activities of criminal organisations in Romania and in other EU Member States.
Director Wainwright stated that “Europol’s cooperation with Romanian authorities is good and improving in many areas of common interest. Since my last visit in Romania 4 years ago, the information exchange between Europol and Romanian law enforcement authorities has more than doubled and major successes in tackling organised crime have been achieved. Europol will continue to support Romanian authorities in their fight against serious crime and terrorism.”
