Europol celebrates its 15th anniversary

The Hague, the Netherlands

news

2014 marks the 15th year of existence of Europol. On this occasion, the Mayor of The Hague will meet with Europol's Director and staff on Friday, 27 June at Europol's headquarters in The Hague in recognition of the agency's anniversary. At the event, Europol will present a new unique publication which shows how art, design, architecture, policing and European cooperation come together at Europol's headquarters.

Since its establishment in 1993, Europol has evolved from the Europol Drugs Unit into a European agency with a mandate to combat all forms of serious organised crime and terrorism. Together with the EU Member States and other international partners, Europol has supported and coordinated thousands of operations over the years. In 2013, over 18 000 new cases were supported by Europol.

The young and fast growing organisation required more fitting accommodation, which was delivered by the Netherlands, as the Host State, in 2011. Europol's headquarters is a highly secure building, located in The Hague's international zone of peace and justice. Europol's headquarters was built with green and environmentally-friendly sedum roofs covering 4600 m2 and therefore has an extremely low carbon footprint. In addition, as required by Dutch law, 1% of all investment budgets for government housing projects are devoted to funding the installation of art projects by living artists. Five artworks were created for the new headquarters, inspired by Europol's values of integrity, accountability, effectiveness, teamwork and initiative.

The new Europol book also provides insights into Europol's activities, operations and successes over the 15 years of its existence. The book is available through the online EU bookshop.
