Europol appeals for help in identifying suspect behind IKEA store explosions

The Hague, the Netherlands

news

On behalf of Belgian and Dutch authorities, Europol is appealing for information following blasts at IKEA stores on 30 May 2011. The perpetrator, who is thought to be the same for each attack, placed improvised explosive devices (IEDs) inside IKEA stores before making a quick exit. The devices then detonated, causing injuries and property damage - one could have been potentially fatal.

Europol is supporting cases with the same modus operandi from Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany and the Netherlands, and the public is now being asked for clues to help confirm the identity of the main suspect. The suspect has been filmed by surveillance cameras and two witnesses have also described the offender escaping. The suspect is described as follows:

Description

Gender: Male
Age: 35 - 45 years
Size: around 175 cm
Figure: Slender to well-built, Central European origin
Other: Tanned skin, fair short hair, stubble and wearing glasses
Language: Has spoken English only

Dutch Police have provided the following statement:
On Monday, 30 May 2011 around 19.00, a minor explosion took place at the IKEA store in Son, close to Eindhoven. Dutch Police started extensive investigations on the same day - explosions also took place at IKEA stores in Lomme, Lille in France, and Ghent in Belgium. The police are in possession of footage showing a person behaving suspiciously at the Son IKEA store, as well as footage with a light blue Fiat Punto car.
