Europol and Mnemonic reinforce their cooperation in the fight against cybercrime

Europol's European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) and Mnemonic – the Norwegian IT information security services company - concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last month that allows for enhanced cooperation in the joint public-private fight against the growing problem of cybercrime. This strengthened cooperation was underlined yesterday by a visit of Mnemonic to Europol's headquarters in The Hague.

Combating today's digital security challenges requires a collective approach in which law enforcement and private industry are compelled to work closely together. In this complex environment, such partnerships are becoming increasingly important, especially due to the rapid rate at which technology continues to evolve. In particular, this MoU allows for the exchange of expertise, statistics and strategic information on cyber threats between the two parties.

Cooperation between Europol's EC3 and Mnemonic is already leading to successful remedial activities. In addition, further cooperation areas have been identified such as the potential to expand the sharing of cyber threat intelligence, the examination of passive DNS data and malware analysis, through Mnemonic's role with Gjøvik University College and the Norwegian Center for Cyber and Information Security (CCIS).

Troels Oerting, Head of the European Cybercrime Centre says: "This is a notable event for EU law enforcement and the IT security industry, with the first signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with a company from the Norwegian private sector. We aim to intensify our mutual cooperation, within the frameworks of our relevant legislation, to jointly enhance our ability to prevent, prosecute and disrupt cybercrime. This is no mere ceremonial gesture - it is the establishment of a trusted partnership aimed at achieving tangible results together, to make life more difficult for criminals and easier for the EU public at large".

Jorn Tore Hov, Vice President of Mnemonic, says: "For years, cybercriminals have operated with impunity from the law. This is beginning to change due to the stalwart efforts by Europol's EC3.
