The European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) has been awarded Visa’s Annual Law Enforcement Award for proactive activities aimed at combating electronic payment fraud and for leading successful international operations in this area.
The award was presented by Mr Tolan Steele, Head of Risk Management Visa APCEMEA, during the Visa Security Summit held this week (28-30 May 2013) in Bangkok, Thailand. The excellent results of specific international operations against online fraudsters, as well as EC3 initiatives to prevent this type of crime, were underlined.
“I am extremely pleased that Visa decided to grant the Law Enforcement Award to EC3 - and I am proud of the work done in this area by EC3’s fraud team. This work is indeed a priority for EC3 and our dedicated colleagues in the EU Member States, with whom we share this award. The work continues - and our challenges will increase – so good and trustful cooperation will be key for future success,” said Troels Oerting, Head of the European Cybercrime Centre.
EC3 is one of the key partners for ensuring security and customers’ trust of electronic and online payments. With the fast-growing payment card market, collaboration between the financial sector, regulators and law enforcement are crucial for responding effectively to new threats and targeting the criminal networks that are affecting electronic payments.
The activities of the European Cybercrime Centre at Europol promote integrated, secure and safe payment systems that can be trusted by customers. EC3 supports a variety of measures that aim to protect customers against fraud, including the promotion of security and investigative measures, and provision of training sessions.
