On 28 June 2016, Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) and the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (DG JRC) jointly organised in Brussels a workshop on Virtual Currencies in the context of the fight against fraud and counterfeiting of non-cash means of payments.
Virtual currencies and other emerging instruments supported by blockchain and distributed ledger technology bring innovation and have the potential to revolutionize how public and private sectors are providing their services. The more these services are deployed and create value, the more they will be the target of malicious activities by criminals. The fast growing and emerging characteristics of these technologies represent as well an important challenge for judicial investigations throughout Europe, which can eventually jeopardize prosecution of such type of cybercrime.
The workshop brought together participants from the Commission, academia, industry and EU law enforcement with the objective of analysing emerging cases of fraud and counterfeiting targeting Virtual Currencies and evaluating their possible contribution to the revision of the 2001 Council Framework Decision (2001/413/JHA)[1] in order to enable an effective and solid prosecution of such new type of criminal activities.
