The Data Protection Office at Europol wishes you a happy Data Protection Day #DPD15

The discussion about striking the right balance between freedom and security has become more and more prominent over the last few years. At Europol we are proud to have one of the most robust data protection regimes in the world of law enforcement. It enables us to prevent and combat serious crime and terrorism in an effective manner while duly safeguarding the fundamental rights of individuals.

The Data Protection Day, every year on 28 January, celebrates the anniversary of the Council of Europe Convention 108, a cornerstone of data protection legislation in Europe and beyond for over 30 years.

Europol has a Data Protection Office whose main task is to provide advice and assurance on the compliance with the data protection requirements and the respect for fundamental rights of individuals.

For this year's celebration of Data Protection Day, the Data Protection Office is providing a new e-Learning tool for all Europol staff to reinforce awareness on European data protection rules including Europol's specific and tailor-made data protection framework. Today the Data Protection Office is also launching a new platform for data protection experts active in the field of law enforcement - EDEN (Europol Data Protection Experts Network).
