Europol is delighted to announce the results of its fifth annual photo competition, which this year attracted hundreds of entries from talented law enforcement photographers from across Europe and beyond.
Taken in locations ranging from Austria to Australia,[1] the photographs provide fascinating snapshots of the working lives of police, border guards, customs officials, SWAT teams and more. From peaceful landscapes to dramatically-charged action shots - our favourites made the cut. See the winners below!
First prize of Europol Law Enforcement Photo of the Year 2013 has been awarded to David Conway, a forensic photographer with the Garda Police in Dublin, Ireland, whose image captures a crime scene investigator swabbing a firearm for potential DNA evidence.
Jurgen Knuist from the Netherlands clinched second prize with his photo of an officer examining documents close-up at Rotterdam port.
Alfred Effenberger, a Police Officer from Austria, was awarded third prize with his image taken at the 2013 Austrian Bike Race.
The top three prizewinners win a trip for two to the Netherlands, including a visit to Europol. Their images will also feature in Europol’s 2014 corporate calendars.
[1] Amateur and professional photographers working for law enforcement agencies and law enforcement magazines in EU countries and those countries with Europol Agreements could participate.
