6 suspected euro counterfeiters arrested

On 13/06/2012 the Regional Unit Combating Organized Crime in Plovdiv with support of the General Directorate Combating Organized Crime, Spanish BIBE and Europol have finalized an international police investigation and arrested six persons, suspected with counterfeit Euro banknotes distribution in the territory of Bulgaria and other EU countries. Investigation was run by a Joint Investigative Team (JIT) composed of Bulgarian and Spanish investigators, with participation of Europol and Eurojust. According to the Spanish investigators, the group was active at least for two years.

The suspects were arrested after an attempt to sell 30.000 in counterfeit 100 Euro banknotes in vicinity of one of the Plovdiv hotels.  Immediately ten searches were performed in the premises and vehicles of the suspects. In the framework of this operation police seized:

  • 60.000 Euro in counterfeit Euro;
  • four computers;
  • several mobile phones and SIM cards;
  • two vehicles

This investigation is supervised by Plovdiv regional Prosecution office.
