It is commonly acknowledged that people themselves are the weakest link in the information security chain and attackers have become very sophisticated in exploiting this to their advantage. Today, a typical attacker is more professional, operates more in secrecy, and is relying more heavily on Social Engineering techniques to target victims via trickery and deception into unwittingly or even knowingly providing information and access that would have been much harder to take by force.
Social engineering is the art of manipulating people so they will give up confidential information, such as through the use of phishing emails. In many cases, the victims never learn that they, or their systems, have been attacked.
