On 12 April, Mr Wainwright visited Greece and met with Mr Nicholaos Toskas, Alternate Minister of Interior and Administrative Reconstruction, at the Hellenic Police headquarters in Athens. The latest developments in the migration crisis, Europol’s support to the Greek authorities to combat migrant smuggling networks, as well as Europol’s deployment to the EU Regional Task Force (EURTF) in Piraeus and the hotspots in Greece, were among the topics discussed.
On a separate meeting with Lieutenant General Mr Konstantinos Tsouvalas, Chief of the Hellenic Police, both heads highlighted the excellent cooperation between both organisations, as well as the need to step up joint efforts in the fight against migrant smuggling.
Following these meetings, Mr Wainwright visited the Hellenic Coastguard headquarters in Piraeus, where he met with Admiral Stamatios Raptis, Chief of the Hellenic Coast Guard and his delegation, and discussed issues of mutual interest regarding the fight against serious organised crime.
As part of his trip, Mr Wainwright also had the opportunity to visit the EU Regional Taskforce office in Piraeus.
