Association of Law Enforcement Forensic Accountants Network meets at Europol

The inaugural plenary meeting and conference of the Association of Law Enforcement Forensic Accountants (ALEFA) Network took place in Europol headquarters from 22 to 24 October, with 96 participants attending.

ALEFA is the first organisation of its kind to bring together specialists who are qualified accountants directly employed in law enforcement. The ALEFA Network has been established to develop the quality and reach of forensic accountancy throughout law enforcement agencies, to better assist the courts, victims, witnesses, suspects, defendants and their legal representatives in relation to the investigation of alleged fraud, fiscal, financial and serious organised crime.

The network involves all 28 EU Member States, representatives from the USA, Australia, Canada, and other European countries, together with organisations including Europol, Eurojust and OLAF.

The lead partner in the ALEFA Network Project is An Garda Siochana, through the Criminal Assets Bureau in Ireland. The other project partners are:

• Europol – Financial Intelligence Group

• National Public Prosecutor’s Office for Serious Fraud and Environmental Crime, the Netherlands

• Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) United Kingdom

• NCA (National Crime Agency) United Kingdom

• Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Office, Scotland

• National Bureau of Investigation, Sweden

• Federal Criminal Police Office, Germany.
